The Mourner’s Kaddish is a sacred Jewish prayer traditionally recited by those grieving the loss of a close relative or marking the anniversary of a loved one’s death. It affirms life even in the midst of sorrow, honoring the memory of the departed through praise and devotion.
The Mourner’s Kaddish was offered at the opening session of the NVMA Winter Study and the Freedom Church of the Poor Service led by members of the Nonviolent Medicaid Army. Becca Schuchat, a leader with the Vermont Workers Center, offered this prayer in honor of Erro. Becca shared that the Mourner’s Kaddish is a reminder that when someone dies, what we are called to do is establish God’s kingdom here on earth, to end poverty. The Kaddish tells us that this is how we sanctify the dead and honor their memory, by working to create a world without poverty.
